What Causes Male Baldness?

Baldness is a condition that millions of men have to deal with in their lifetime. As they age, they begin to lose the hair on the top of their heads. But what actually causes baldness to occur?

In men, this condition of hair loss is referred to as male pattern baldness. Normally, we lose hundreds of hairs each day from our scalp. But, they grow back so we never even notice that they are gone. With age, the process slows down and many of those hairs do not return.

Depending on their genes, men can lose hair as early as their twenties. It usually begins in the front and receded backwards towards the nape of the neck. Some men do lose their hair from the center of their head outward. Many men end up with hair loss on the top and in the front.

There can be different reasons for this hair loss. It is best to check with a doctor first to confirm the actual cause before you decide on a course of treatment.

Hair can be lost due to illness. As mentioned above, it is not uncommon to lose hundreds of hairs a day. If you notice, however, that your hair is coming out in large clumps that leave thin areas or bald spots, this can be a cause for concern. There may be an underlying illness which needs to be investigated.

Stress causes physical changes in the body. Prolonged exposure to extreme stress can cause your hair to start falling out. This can be the result of poor nutrition and lack of essential vitamins and minerals.

Medical treatment such as chemotherapy can lead to hair loss. This and radiation can weaken the hair and cause it to fall out.

Scalp infections like ringworm (tinea capitis) can also cause baldness. Fungal infections can lead to a long treatment of oral and topical antifungal agents. Itching conditions like seborrheic dermatitis can also lead to hair loss.

Most men will develop some sort of hair loss as they get older. It is in their genes. Baldness in men is hormonally driven as conversion of testosterone into other substances causes hair follicles to cut down on hair production over time.

There are several treatments on the market that men are using to stimulate the re-growth of their hair. This ranges from topical formulas like minoxidil to hair transplants and other techniques to restore a full head of hair.

Men are more susceptible to hair loss as they age due to genetics. While there are other causes besides genetics, the most common cause of hair loss in men seems to be male pattern baldness. Always check with your doctor for a definitive diagnosis.
