Licorice Root Benefits

Acid Reflux is a disease which is caused when stomach acid enters the esophagus resulting in heart burn. While there are many over the counter medications used to decrease the affects of acid reflux, licorice root is believed to be the herb of choice which alleviates the discomfort caused by stomach acid.

Licorice root is available in the following forms: capsules, tablets and liquid. While many have touted the use of licorice root to relieve acid reflux, there are those who should not use this as a form of treatment.

If you have high blood pressure, avoid licorice root as it will significantly raise the pressure. If taken in large doses, licorice affects the body’s hormone levels. Pregnant women should not take licorice as it could increase the risk of premature labor.

In addition to high blood pressure, licorice root can increase salt and water retention, and lower your potassium level, which can ultimately lead to heart problems. It is also advised not to take licorice root in conjunction with water pills as this, too, decreases one’s potassium to dangerous levels.

While licorice root has been used traditionally in Chinese medicine as a dietary supplement for stomach ulcers, bronchitis, and infections such as hepatitis, it is clear the derivative of licorice root is preferable.

Known as DGL or de-glycyrrhizinated licorice, it does not have the same side effects as its counterpart, glycyrrhiza glabra, which is the licorice itself. In fact, the root of the licorice plant contains flavonoids which are known to stop acid secretions. Studies have confirmed that DGL is more effective than over the counter or prescription drugs in relieving acid reflux.

If you have persistent acid reflux, check with your doctor to determine if licorice root will be beneficial in alleviating the symptoms. Ask your doctor what dosage would be best for you and in what form you should take the licorice root. If the acid reflux continues, you may need to have some tests done to determine how serious the condition is or may become. Moreover, if you do have high blood pressure, ask your doctor to provide you with the best form of treatment for this disease.
