Health Insurance Coverage

Only a handful of companies currently offer comprehensive alternative health insurance coverage.

They include: California-based companies Alternative Insurance and First American Specialty Health Insurance Company, along with Virginia-based company American WholeHealth Networks, Inc..

Many traditional insurance companies only offer discounts for a limited amount of alternative or comprehensive therapies, herbal remedies, or nutritional supplements.

Few alternative health insurance plans will cover any type of herbal remedies, such as milk thistle or black cohash. This is because many plans rarely cover any over-the-counter drugs, including these herbal medications.

If your insurance provider does not offer herbal remedies, consider setting aside money for these medications in a tax-sheltered flexible medical savings account.

Companies such as American Specialty Health Insurance offer employers the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of alternative health insurance supplemental coverage.

These supplemental alternative health insurance plans work in a similar way to both vision or dental plans. Companies like American WholeHealth offers discounts for services provided by any of their participating network practitioners.

Many traditional coverage plans deny participants alternative health insurance because many complementary and alternative health medications and therapies have not undergone the same rigorous scientific testing that Western-style medications and treatments have, even though they have been in practice in Europe, Asia, Africa, and more for hundreds of years.

The alternative and complementary therapies that are most likely to be covered by alternative health insurance options are chiropractic services, acupuncture, and massage therapy.

Alternative health insurance for approved visits offer patients reasonable co-payments for an otherwise costly procedure. It should be noted, however, that these services are usually capped to the number of visits that can be covered.
